Mayors' Ride Bios - Robert Howe
1. Which
Relay link do you want to ride?
Davis, CA to Folsom, CA
2. How you found us
Jacques Graber cc'd me in emails to Martin Krieg
3. Why you want to do
this ride
Why not? It's been a few years since I did the Davis-->Folsom run
on my highwheel, and Jacques said he wouldn't mind company
4. Tell us about your touring experience- if
little or none, indicate
many miles have you ridden over the last year:
Touring: generally one ride a year on a recumbent. For example,
one year I went with a friend from Aptos CA to San Luis Obispo, CA;
Another year we went from Truckee CA to Stockton CA after going past
lake Tahoe and over Ebbert's pass.
General day-to-day riding: My commute is 16 miles/day on a normal
bicycle.
5. Tell us about your bike
For this ride, I'd be riding my 1888 Columbia Expert highwheel with a 54\" wheel. See a (very tiny) movie at http://home.inreach.com/rhowehmd/AntiqueBikesImages/FolsomBridge.mov
An older photo of me with my bike is at: http://home.inreach.com/rhowehmd/AntiqueBikesImages/Yosemite1986.jpg
Or, a photo of me with some other riders at: http://home.inreach.com/rhowehmd/AntiqueBikesImages/GoodRoadsCentennial.jpg
(I'm the second to the right; Jacques is at the far right).
6. Describe your training
regimen
My regular riding is 16 miles/day in the foothills outside Placerville
CA. For the Davis-->Folsom run, I'll spend a few Saturday mornings
on the highwheel going from my home outside Placerville to Diamond
Springs (hilly route) Or to Pleasant Valley (more flat).
7. How are you making time for this
I can take the day off ... no problem
8. What are your fears about doing this ride
No fears... I've done the route before. Indeed, I went farther before
from Winters CA to Placerville CA (but over 2 days). It was a hot day
too, in the 100 degree range.
9. Do you have any special skills that you feel
would benefit the Mayors' Ride?
Hmmmm. Well, there's the whole highwheel rider thing ....
10. If you are involved with other non-profit
organizations, please tell us about them
The Wheelmen
11. Anything else you'd like to share with us?
Not that I can think of. But email
me if you have questions.

 | These bike friendly corridors will link our urban areas with our wilderness and other open space lands and they will be designed so that wildlife will be able to safely cross them. On the stretches between urban areas, markers along the Greenway will explain the history and geography of the various regions that one passes through. |
