Mayors' Ride Bios - Bryon Wright

1. Which Relay link do you want to ride?

I heard that you need a rider for Steamboat Springs, CO to Salt Lake City, UT. I'd like to do that leg.

2. How you found us

A double-forwarded email from Lisa Romney in Rocky Anderson's office originally sent to the MBAC's distribution list.

3. Why you want to do this ride

Quite honestly, I've been itchin' to get out for a long ride this summer. It doesn't hurt that you all have an interesting cause attached.

4. Your touring experience

I've ridden several unsupported short tours around UT and AZ. I joined a friend going unsupported across the country on a bike for a leg from Eugene, OR to Salt Lake City two summer ago. I also bike quite a few supported MTB tours throughout the year.

5. Tell us about your bike

Which one? (I'm not sure yet which bike to take... They are all quite nice!)

6. Describe your training regimen

I ride with friends, slight acquaintances, total strangers when I can. This amounts to about 200 miles a week on the road and off. Riding = training = riding some more. I occasionally get in a race.

7. How many miles do you ride a year

I'd estimate about 5000 miles per year.

8. Are you car free or Interested

I have one car for my family - we carpool, bike commute (usually with the kid in the trailer part of the way), walk, take the excellent mass transit options around SLC, and sometimes just drive. I'll probably never go car free but I reduce my use where I can.

9. How are you making time for this

My boss is both a nice guy and in Europe - hopefully a good combination for not getting in trouble at work. My wife is just plain supportive. My kid gives me winks and certainly understands.

10. How many miles do you plan to ride in 2002

As many as I can enjoy, plus a few more.

11. What are your fears about doing this ride

I try not to fear these sort of things.

12. Do you have any special skills

I can't play the ukulele, nor juggle 4 items for more than a few seconds. I can, however, old-home repair like a crazy-fool, carry on biomedical research, and make a pleasing pizza - often simultaneously.

13. Do you have any helpful friends for us

They'd surely hear about you through this and contact you if necessary.

14. What other activities do you do

I like to ski-tour in the winter, have chats with friends, fool-around with my kid and wife. Reading is awfully nice! I photograph things a bit.

15. Your age

28 years old

17. Your occupation

Graduate student at the University of Utah

As a result of such efforts, the National Bicycle Greenway network will establish the bicycle as a desirable part of the transportation mix. As more of the Greenways is built and maintained, for a fraction of the cost of building even just a few miles of interstate freeway, the many advantages of bicycle transportation will soon become evident.
