City of Indianapolis to welcome cross-country cyclist - celebrate greenway system

City of Indianapolis to welcome cross-country cyclist and celebrate greenway system

Indianapolis – Deputy Mayor Steve Campbell will present a proclamation to Concetta Curtis, a cyclist who is biking across the country to promote a national greenway system.

WHERE: City Market

WHEN: Friday, June 3
10:30 a.m.

Curtis is part of the National Bicycle Greenway (NBG), an organization focused on promoting designated bicycling routes throughout the country. She began her ride in Miami and will eventually end in San Francisco. NBG organizes this “Mayors’ Ride” every year to promote cycling and greenways.

Last year, the City of Indianapolis’ Metropolitan Planning Organization released a map that details more than 380 miles of streets and trails designated for cycling in Central Indiana. Indianapolis is home to 35 miles of designated greenways trails, including the Monon Trail, Central Canal Tow Path, and the Pleasant Run Trail.

Restaurants, lodging and other support services will spring up along the Greenway, creating new jobs, and the structures that support these services will be designed to enhance the natural character of the Greenway. On some parts of the Greenway network, young people can find summer work transporting elderly and disabled people on bike taxis. Here, a bike shuttle service will also be available for transporting items that are inconvenient to be carried on a bicycle.
